Penetrator launch diagnostics from breech pressure measurements during operation of an air cannon
We report breech pressure measurements during the firing of an air cannon. We find that the pressure record is a useful and convenient diagnostic of the penetrator projectile motion during launch—supplementing or replacing beamor wire-breaking speedometers and on-board accelerometers. With little effort, launch speed can be measured with a 2σ error of 1.75 m s−1 or better than 5%.
